Homer, Alaska is rapidly becoming one of the best known
fishing ports for king (Chinook) salmon as well as silver (Coho) salmon. Most all our king
salmon fishing is done by trolling, in saltwater, in Kachemak Bay and lower Cook inlet.
Salmon caught in saltwater are still on the feed and full of energy from not yet traveling
up freshwater rivers and streams. This produces some of the best salmon fishing you'll
ever have the opportunity to enjoy. Homer's location is the key to our high success. As
the salmon move up Cook inlet toward their spawning streams, such as the world famous
Kenai river, they pass by Homer, offering our anglers first opportunity at catching them.
For the larger Kings, plan your trip for any time in late April through the last of June. These migrating salmon are the largest of the king salmon, averaging 25-45 pounds with 70 pounders, and up, being caught as well (the record is 97+ pounds). Check our "Halibut Page" to find the best times for a salmon/halibut combo trip.
We also offer packages for a combination of saltwater fishing for halibut and/or salmon with us, and freshwater fishing for King and/or silver salmon in the world famous Kenai River. A package such as this can give you the best of both worlds with giant halibut and the largest King salmon in the world. With this flexible package you can spend a few days with us fishing for halibut, while staying at our very comfortable and brand new lodging facilities, then move on to Soldotna the same day to fish the giant Kings for the next few days. Or, reverse the program and start by fishing the Kenai and end up fishing with Lucky Pierre Charters.
Winter Kings (feeder Kings) keep the fishing excitement going year-around. The feeder king salmon are immature salmon averaging 18 - 28 lbs. and are caught by trolling Kachemak Bay waters. These king salmon are, in our opinion, the finest of all for eating. Every year, Homer, Alaska holds a "Winter King Salmon Tournament", usually sometime in March. Check our "What's New Page" for exact time and details. For the fastest saltwater salmon fishing action, combine fishing for feeder kings and silver salmon during the months of July and August.
Silver (Coho) salmon fishing:
There is only one way to describe this fishery -- fast! That's right, if you have never
fished silvers, you're in for a real treat. Silvers are not a large salmon with average
sizes running from 8-15 Ibs. and a 20 pounder being a big one. Silvers are, however,
ferocious feeders, and the purest form of excitement to fight on light tackle. For
saltwater fishing, for silver salmon, plan your trip for anytime in late July through mid
to late August. For freshwater silver salmon fishing, mid August thru mid September is
best. (More photos)
