| This is the fifth year that the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club has offered
the Junior Nordic Program. The program is provided free to current
members of the KNSC. A Family membership costs $50. There is an $8
Community Schools sign-up fee for each participant. This year, lessons
are planned for the 6 Saturdays after the Besh Cup races, held the
end of January at McNeil Canyon. Lessons will start on January 31
and continue through the Kachemak Marathon, held in mid-March. Junior
Nordic skiers and their friends and family are encouraged to participate
in the events during the Kachemak Bay Marathon Ski. The guiding principle
is “it is supposed to be fun.” Along with lessons it is
our suggestion to parents that they try skiing, with each other during
lessons and with the kids anytime. The 2k participatory tour, held
as part of the Kachemak Marathon, is a grand parade of young skiers,
with their parents and friends, showing their stuff. The old adage
rings true: A family that skis together smiles together.
Sign up for the Junior Nordic Program by contacting Homer Community
Schools at 235-6090. Sign up dates are January 6, 7, and 8. They
manage all of the advertising and provide much of the administrative
and logistical support. This allows us to provide lessons to youths,
aged 4-12, without charging any additional activity fees. The family
membership fee supports KNSC grooming, trail construction and easement
acquisition efforts.
We try to provide a coach/skier ratio of 8 to 1. This may or may
not include the helper. The coaches and helpers are all volunteers.
Even with last year’s lack of snow, Junior Nordic met every
Saturday scheduled. Classes normally meet on Saturday at the new
Bay Crest Trails trailhead (on the Sterling Highway) at 2:00 p.m.
and are over between 3:15 and 3:30. Last year several Saturday classes
were held at the Lookout Mountain Trails due to wet or icy conditions
at Bay Crest. Please call Community Schools at 235-6090 after noon
every Friday for an advisory message on conditions and locations.
The quality and commitment of our Junior Nordic coaches and helpers
is a big reason why the program has doubled in numbers of participation
each of the past three seasons. This 5th season could possibly include
100 participants, after having over 60 last year. The skier’s
age and ability are the criteria for grouping. Skiers are divided
into groups by the coaches, generally at the first Saturday lesson.
We encourage anyone who has interest in coaching or helping, to
please give us a call. If you do not feel comfortable being a coach
for a group, you can still help, reducing the coach/skier ratio
and having lots of fun. We will have coach/helper training at 11:00
a.m. of the first Saturday of lessons. You will find, as we have,
the delight in sharing the love of the sport with our youth. You
can still buy skis from the KNSC. We have about six pair left for
$50 each. We credit $25 for used KNSC skis in good condition towards
the purchase of a new pair. Louise Seguela (235-9408) and Kenton
Bloom (235-6600) are the co-coordinators of the program. Feel free
to call with questions, offers to volunteer, to find out more, or
to buy skis. |
