| Water Pump |
$345.00 This beautifully painted water pump is made of
Sitka Spruce.
Long crossing between islands required Aleut/Alutiiq paddlers to remain
at sea for long periods, even for days. Under these conditions removing
bilge water through the narrow cockpit hole was impossible. Paddlers
developed an ingenious mouth operated suction pump for this task. Water
was sucked into the hollowed out tube and lifted over the side to
drain. Approx. size 24" long.

| Aleut/Alutiiq Paddle |
$1295.00 Paddle is handcrafted from Alaskan Yellow Cedar. Aleut/Alutiiq hunters used a paddle with a single narrow blade that was long and pointed. The blade was fully half the length of the paddle, the surface area it needed for power paddling. The paddles were also crafted this way to enter the water quietly while hunting. The shape also made it easier for paddling in the wind. In rough water groups of kayakers might ride out a storm by rafting their boats together with their paddles. All the paddles were decorated with different hunting scenes and geometric designs. Appox. 60in x 4.5in
.
