Round Robin 1998

GROUPS: There will be 12 people in each group. This way we can work on this for one full year. We can have a few groups but each group can have only 12.

DATES: The due dates will fall on the first of every month! We will start with January 1st as the date that our center will be due to the person below your name on your list! You will send to the same person every time. We need to stick with the dues dates because the rounds are only 1 month apart, we do not want people to feel rushed if they are getting the progressing quilt late.

ROUNDS: We will have 11 rounds. You will be getting your original center back in 1 year. Each person will make there own center and work on each persons center as it comes to you. You will be doing a different round on each persons original center. The rounds will be as follows:

CENTER: The first thing needed is the center, your center can be whatever size or shape you like! I do not want to put any limits on this sizes only because I know each person usually has something in mind, but this will really determine how big your quilt will end up! Read all of the rounds before you decide what to do for your center. you will need to remember that if your block is directional it might not look good sitting on point! Your center is due to the person right under your name on the list (which will be proided when all people are chosen for each group) by JANUARY 1st.

ROUND 1: QUILTERS CHOICE! I want to start this off FUN so this round will be do WHATEVER YOU WANT! If you want to applique, paper piecing or seminole that is fine.I want you to feel comfortable with the process of doing a Round Robin and I feel that if there are not a lot of limits to start off with it will set some minds at ease. This Round will due to the next person by FEBRUARY 1st

ROUND 2: This round we will be SETTING ON POINT. I have found that you do not need to just cut plain fabric for this, you can do each corner with a quilt block like a log cabin a checker boarddesign.....the possibilities are endless. If you need information on how to set on point let me know and I can point you in the right direction. This round is due to the next person by MARCH 1st.

Round 3: This round is PAPER PIECING. You can find a lot of information over the Internet on paper piecing. You can get free patterns or use a book! If your not quite sure how to paper piece gosee the following site:

Paper Piecing Sites

There are also a lot of great books on the subject of paper piecing, again if you have any questions please contact me threw e-mail. This round is due to the next person APRIL 1st.

ROUND 4: This round will be LOG CABIN. You can do any type of log cabin of your choic. There are all kinds of ways to play with the traditional block and there are a few new ideas outthere! This round is due to the next person by MAY 1st.

Round 5: This round you will be putting on a boarder of TRIANGLES. This can be 1/2 square triangles or pyramids what ever you like! Please keep this round at 6". This round is due to the nextperson by JUNE 1st.

ROUND 6: This round you are to do some APPLIQUE. You can do it by hand or machine. (just as long as it is nicely done). This is a great place to get creative, the patterns are endless and by now the quilt has a lot of places to use your talents. You may applique anywhere you want it does not need to be just a new boarder but is also an option. This round is due to the next person by JULY 1st.

Round 7: This round is WATERCOLOR. There are a few methods out there and which ever you chose to work on will be fine! There is a large selection on this subject. This round is due to the next person by AUGUST 1st.

Round 8: This round you can do what you like as long as you use SOLID fabrics! NO PRINTS even if it reads as a solid from a distance. Please keep this round at 6" also. This round is due to the next person by SEPTEMBER 1st.

Round 9: This round will be working with CURVES! You can do a drunkards path or clam shell again your choice, the possibilities are endless. This rounds is due to the next person byOCTOBER 1st.

Round 11: QUILTERS CHOICE This is the last round to be added to the quilt. You can do whatever you want to do. We will be trying to tie everything together to send this quilt home. Have fun. The sky is the limit. This Round is due back to its owner by DECEMBER 1st.

Contents of the RR box

There are some things you need in your box and others are options. Please go threw the list and I will tell you some of the reasons for the things you put in your box.

Center

This is a MUST because if you do not put it in the box no one can work on it. Remember your center can be whatever size shape or color you chose. There are no limits.

Fabric

Because of the size of group and number of rounds we have in this Round Robin I think you should put at least 2 yards of fabric that go with the theme, color scheme or mood of your center. If you chose to put more you may do so. This does not need to be 2 yards of 1 fabric it can be 1/2 yardcuts or even fat quarters of several fabrics. This will help each person who works on your center tie things together! You will be using a lot of your fabrics or purchasing fabric just as everyone who works on you rcenter will be doing for you. You can ask that certain fabric colors only be used if you want!

Journal

This is a great way to document what is being added to your center and by who is doing the work! This is a MUST if you receive a journal. If you do not want a journal that is fine but some will really want everyone in there group to do this! You can write about what you thought about the center as you received it and what your plans are for it. You can tell about yourself, the things you do where you live, your family or what got you into quilting! PLEASE do this for the people who have a journal.

Rap Sheet

This is to let everyone in the group know who you are! You can write this in the front of your journal. It really helps people get a feeling for what you are like and what they can do with your center. You should write your likes & dislikes of colors. Also you can write about what you do, how you got into quilting, other hobbies tell as much as you can! Again this is very helpful to those who are working on your center.

Disposable Camera

This is an option but I will tell you that when your quilt comes home you will really love to see all of the rounds as they are being added to you center! This is great to document the history of your quilt and share with others. Each person who works on your quilt MUST take a picture of them self with the center. (if there is a camera in the box) It is a good idea to make sure this has a flash, because not everyone will be dragging your quilt outside to take a picture!

Photo

Again this is an option, but it helps the person who is working on your center get a feel for YOU. I received a center and was clueless as to what to do with it until I received a Thank You from the owner and inside was a picture. I had the center done in no time! It just made a world of difference seeing her face. A picture is worth a 1000 words.

Label

I know Documenting a quilt is very important to some and others do not care, so this is an option. You can just throw in a square of muslin or go all the way with a signature block. For my first Round Robin I made a Storm at Sea block with an Orca Whale appliqued onto it for my center and for my signature block I just made a square in a square which is the center of a Storm at Sea for my signature square. I did it in the same colors so it will look great on the back. DO NOT SIGN THE QUILT (unless the owner asks you to in a certain place)

Fabric Marker

I would suggest a PIGMA fine tip marker. This is so everyone will have the correct pen to mark on your quilt! I did not do this and had someone write on mine with RED permanent marker and I am sure if it will run and bleed all over my finished project. This is an option because if you do not want a signature square you won't need a pen for people to sign. Again DO NOT SIGN THE QUILT!!!!

Goodies

Another option but very nice is to put a little something in the box for each person in your group! A gift of THANKS. It can be a fat quarter of fabric, I put a thimble with my State name in for one of my Round Robins. This does not have to be a huge gift it can be handmade or anything you think says thanks in your own special way!

*************************************** IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER ***************************************

Round Robin Respect Rules 1: Treat each growing quilt with great respect. Keep the quilt in a clean/dry place. Protect the quilt from direct sunlight. Have a special place to keep each growing quilt so it does not disappear in a messy studio/sewing room. 2: Pre wash each and every fabric that you add to the quilt. Test each fabric to be sure it is colorfast. 3: Sew with care to match points and corners. Do your best to make the craftsmanship on the quilt perfect. 4: Press gently. 5:Place the quilt in the box and deliver it to the next person on the list as promptly as you can. You may need to get a bigger box as the quilt grows. 6: Don't forget!!! Once you are signed up for the exchange, you are committed to meeting the deadlines and finishing the project. Other people are depending on you. 7: You will always pass the growing block you have just completed to the person following your name on the rotation list. The person at the bottom of the list passes to the person at the top. 8: You must be willing to sign a waver stating you will be dependable and if you can not do your part you will willingly forfeit your part in the RR and someone will take your place! (we have had some trouble in the past and this is to cover our own hides, as well as make sure your center is safe, this will be threw e-mail) We want everyone to have a lot of fun!
