Westside Detail


1. Baycrest/Homestead Trails - Accessed either from Roger’s Loop Rd. off the Sterling Hwy or Rucksack Rd. off Diamond Ridge Rd., this system of trails offers tall grasslands, swampy river valleys, and boreal forest. Maps at trailheads show trails used for winter skiing. Map

2. Diamond Creek Gulch - Located on west side of Sterling Hwy just north of Diamond Ridge Rd. Park at chain gate and walk about one mile down to the beach or stay up high in the spruce forest. Trail down gulch is steep and rough. Harlequin ducks frequent beach. Map

3. North Fork Road - Long gravel road that loops and climbs from the Sterling Highway around to Anchor Point. Lots of good songbirds here, especially the sections down by the Anchor River. Map

4. Old Sterling Hiway - This rough gravel road goes through swampy river valley. There are several small lakes just off the road where Red-throated Loons and several species of waterfowl nest. Road scheduled for paving in 2001. Map

5. Anchor River - This very popular fishing stream has good trails going up one or both banks. Good birding early in the morning. Turn off Sterling Hwy near Anchor River Inn onto Old Sterling Rd. and follow signs to park at any of several campgrounds.The mouth of the river is great for waterfowl and shorebirds during migrations.
