Trails

The following trails are maintained by several groups. All of them can be wet and muddy at times. Look and listen for forest birds and songbirds.

1. Pratt Museum nature trail - Located behind the museum (on Bartlett St. just north of Pioneer Ave.) near a totem pole, this trail has markers and a nature guide. Map

2. Calvin and Coyle Trail - Located at the end of Mariner Dr.(off East End Rd. just past East Hill Rd.), this woodsy trail leads to a viewing platform on the northeast end of Beluga Lake. Maintained by the Kachemak Heritage Land Trust. Map

3. Carl Wynn Nature Center - Located on Skyline Dr. (1.5 miles east of East Hill Rd.), these trails offer the greatest diversity of songbirds in the area. Visitor Center, programs, and trails run by the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. Map

4. Stone Step Lake - There is an active Aleutian Tern colony west of this lake but there is no direct access. Birds from this colony are easily and reliably seen from boats on the Bay near the mouth of Fritz Creek or from the beach. Map

5. Eagle Lake (not shown on map) - About 20 miles from town out East End Rd., this lake has had Parasitic Jaegers and Pacific Loons nesting on or near it in recent years . Take Circle Lake Rd about 2 ½ miles (turn right at the “Y”) to a small pullout with a four-wheeler trail heading uphill and then hike the short trail to the lake. Map

6. Ohlson Mountain - Highest point on the road system, this old military radar site offers a great view and a chance for ptarmigan. Map
