Tides

The tidal fluctuations in Kachemak Bay are some of the largest in the world. During new and full moons the tides may vary by almost 30 feet between high and low tide in 6 hours. This means that you must be very aware of which way the tide is going when you walk the beaches. Watch for places where you may get cut off by an incoming tide. If you do get cutoff, wade through the water to get to high ground, no matter what you are wearing, before you end up swimming! Tide books are available from many banks and retail stores in town. Failure to respect the tides may get you wet at the least or cause some very serious danger to your life!
