-----------------Deciduous Trees---------------------

Flowering Crab (Malus dolgo)
A cold hardy crab with profuse white flowers and an upright spreading form.  Abundant fruit is a significant food source for native birds, or can be collected for jam.  Height 30', spread 25'

European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia)         
An Alaskan favorite.  An oval tree with white flower clusters in spring and dark green leaflets turning rusty orange in fall.  Ornamental reddish-orange berries last from fall through winter, attracting birds as well.   Requires well-drained soil, full sun.  Height 35', spread 20'
                     


Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) A large tree with dark green leaves and white bark that peels when mature.  Golden fall color.  We stock a superior ornamental strain.  Prefers full sun, and moist soil.  Useful for large areas.  Height 50', spread 35'  

 

Cutleaf Weeping Birch (Betula pendula' dalecarlica' ) An elegant tree with weeping branches and leaves which turn yellow in fall. Maturing bark turns white.  Very ornamental.  Performs best in rich, moist, acidic soil. Height 40' , spread 20'

 

Canada Red Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana shubertii) A straight, uniform tree with white spring flowers.  Leaves emerge in spring green , turning to purple in summer.  Full to partial sun.  Height 25', spread 20'

 

Mayday Tree (Prunus padus)
A vigorous growing tree with large, fragrant white flowers.  One of the first trees to leaf out in spring.  Dark green foliage turns yellow to red in the fall.  Black fruit.  Forms a rounded, low branched tree.  Thrives in moist, well drained soil and full sun.  Height 30' spread 25'
                          
              

Amur Chokecherry (Prunus maackii)
A small tree producing white flowers and fruits, usually eaten by birds before fully ripe.  The bark is golden bronze with a glistening metallic color, flaking off similar to birch.  Excellent winter effect and landscape interest.  Rounded shape. Very hardy.  Full sun.  Height 30', spread 25'
                                 

Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) Native tree maturing to a rounded shape with greenish-white bark and small leaves which turn deep yellow to orange in fall.  Tolerates most soil conditions.  Excellent for natural effect.  Height 40', spread 25'

 

Burr Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) A slow-growing, cold-hardy oak with a rounded open canopy and dark green lobed foliage which turns amber in autumn.  Acorns and corky ridged bark appears with maturity.  Tolerates a variety of soil types.  Height 30', spread 30'

 

Norland Apple (Malus 'norland')  A medium sized green eating and baking apple known for its hardiness.  Stores well if picked under-ripe.  Ripens in late summer.  Requires well drained soil and full sun. Height 15', spread 15' 

Lilac (Syringa spp)  We stock 3 varieties of flowering lilacs: 'Alexander Pink', 'James Macfarlane' and 'Late Lilac' 

 

Alder (Ulnus sinuata or Ulnus tenuifolia)
A native tree known well for its "screening and greening" properties. Machine dug with a minimum of 3 stems per clump.  Height 30',  spread 20'

----------------------Conifers---------------------

Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) 'techny' or 'wareana' Dense, deep green foliage on a pyramidal form.  Can be used as a specimen or an informal hedge.  Tolerates full sun to partial shade.  Height 10', spread 6'

 

Siberian Larch (Larix siberica) ; Broad pyramidal tree with clusters of soft green deciduous needles in spring that turn golden yellow in fall and shed in winter.  Retains attractive cones over winter. Tolerates most soil types.  Full sun to partial shade.  Height 35', spread 10'     

 

Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) A fast-growing evergreen tree with uniform, conical shape and shiny blue needles. Height 50', spread 15'

 

Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta) Slender pine native to southeast Alaska. Twisted needles and inward facing cones.  Prefers well-drained, acidic soil and full sun.  Height   50', spread 10'

 

Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestris) An attractive ornamental with rounded form and rich blue-green needles.  Fast growing.  Prefers well-drained soil.  Height 50', spread 10'

 

Native Spruce. (Picea spp) Most common on the lower Kenai Peninsula is the Lutz Spruce which is a cross between Sitka Spruce and White Spruce.  Grows anywhere except in standing water.  Will grow in full sun or full shade.  Height 60' spread 20'

Up to 8'------ $5/foot for park grade, $10/foot for landscape grade (straight leader, even branching to the ground).

8' to 16' ------$15/foot for park grade, $20/foot for landscape grade.
